Eritrean National Football Federation (ENFF) has accepted Ethiopia’s Fasil Kenema’s request to play a friendly match against a local side in Asmara.

The Emperors are thus poised to become the first ever Ethiopian team to play a football match in the neighboring country.

The move comes days after the two countries buried the hatchet, ending close to two decades of hostilities that claimed thousands of lives in border conflicts.

“Your initiative and request for a friendly match between your team and an Eritrean team in Eritrean capital Asmara, really is a breakthrough that advocate the vision of the leadership of the sisterly countries.

“Subsequently the ENFF would like to confirm to you that it has started all necessary preparations to host you in a very near future,” ENFF confirmed in writing.

On Sunday, Dr Abiy Ahmed was given a warm welcome as he became the first Ethiopian PM in history to visit Eritrea since the two countries separated following a bitter and bloody war.

Abiy and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea penned peace and trade pacts on behalf of the two countries to normalize relations.

“ENFF and the Eritrean sport community extend its support to augment the overall reconciliation and cooperation process as taken by the two sisterly countries,” the statement added.
